Frequently asked questions
Buying, selling, licensing, shipping and returns — the short answers.
What is The Boreal Codex?+
A curated, made-in-Canada marketplace for fantasy & TTRPG art — digital downloads and physical goods, all from hand-reviewed Canadian artists.
Are digital files delivered instantly?+
Yes. The moment your payment clears, digital art, maps, tokens and PDFs are available to download from your account.
What licence do I get with a digital purchase?+
A personal licence by default; commercial and extended tiers are offered per-piece where the artist allows. See Licensing Artwork for the full breakdown.
Do professional GMs/DMs have to buy a commercial licence?+
No, not necessarily. As long as you aren’t sharing your images publicly for the benefit of your business, or distributing them in whole or part (i.e. reselling, packaging as part of a sale, using as promotion, or featuring in promotional material/streaming), then you can just use the personal licence to buy artwork that you will use in your game and only share with the players at your table for the purposes of playing the game. The fact you get paid to run the game is not the same as getting paid for providing unlicensed access to the artwork.
How much of my purchase goes to the artist?+
Every artist keeps 70% of what they sell, after costs — and featured artists keep 80%. Always paid out and credited by name.
Do you use AI-generated art?+
No. Everything on the Codex is made by a named human artist. We do not allow AI-laundered work.
How do I become a seller?+
Apply on the Sell page. We review every applicant by hand; once approved, guided onboarding sets up your studio.
How does shipping work for physical goods?+
Physical items ship print-on-demand or direct from the artist. See Shipping & Delivery for timelines and regions.
What is your return policy?+
Digital goods are generally final sale; physical goods can be returned if faulty or damaged. Full terms on Returns & Refunds.
Is checkout secure and Canadian?+
Yes — payments are processed by Helcim (a Canadian processor), GST/HST is calculated correctly, and we never store full card numbers.
How do I contact you?+
Through our contact page. We’re happy to help with orders, licensing, or selling.
